about us
ABYDOS/The Directors Theater was founded in 1999
to extend the range of directorial expression and to further the
public’s understanding and appreciation of the director’s
role in creating live theater and related media arts.
The soul and passion of ABYDOS/The Directors
Theater comes from individual directors through their artistic vision,
skill, knowledge and originality. We seek texts that offer noteworthy
opportunities for theatricality—plays that inspire and require
the art of the director. Abydos is here to add to the vibrant theatre
scene in the Bay Area, working in collaboration with a range of
artists such as writers, actors, designers, musicians, and choreographers
and a host of others including board members, staff, volunteers
and audiences. We provide opportunities for new and emerging directors
to find their voices, develop their craft, and create good work.
Producing Director Paul Draper is a founder
of ABYDOS/The Directors Theater and Assistant Professor of Theatre
Arts at Sonoma State University. Directing credits include Twelfth
Night, Spring Awakening, Amadeus, Olleana, Measure for Measure,
Shimmer, Voice on The Prairie, Alfred Stieglitz Loves O’Keefe,
The Show-off, Cabaret, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Force of
Habit, Cymbeline and Three Sisters. He is a former resident director
with the Guthrie Theater. He holds an MFA in directing from Columbia
University and is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and
Choreographers (SSDC).
